अशोक चक्रधर की एक कविता है - आवाज देकर रिक्शे वाले को बुलाया/वो कुछ लंगड़ाता हुआ आया/मैंने पूछा/ यार, पहले ये तो बतलाओ/पैर में चोट है कैसे चलाओगे?/ रिक्शेवाले ने कहा/ बाबूजी, रिक्शा पैर से नहीं, पेट से चलता है। मगर, बिहार के बेनीपंट्टी का संतोष तो इस तर्जुमे से भी आगे निकल गया है। वह दोनों आंखों से अंधा है और परिवार के पेट की खातिर छोटे भाई के साथ रिक्शा खींच रहा है। वह पैडल मारता है और उसका छोटा भाई हैंडल संभालता है। यह एक इंसान के जीवन के प्रति असीम उत्साह की कहानी तो है ही, जीवन के किसी भी मोड़ पर हार को स्वीकार नहीं करने का संदेश भी देती है।

मधुबनी जिले के बेनीपट्टी ब्लॉक के कछड़ा गांव के बसवरिया टोला निवासी इन भाइयों में नेत्रहीन संतोष राम की उम्र 16 साल और राजू महज 12 वर्ष का है। गरीबी की मार और पिता की बीमारी से त्रस्त होकर दोनों भाइयों ने रिक्शा चलाने का फैसला किया। दोनों आंखों से नेत्रहीन संतोष रिक्शा की चालक सीट पर बैठ कर दोनों पांवों से पैंडल मारता है और उसके आगे बैठकर छोटा भाई राजू राम हैंडल व ब्रेक संभालता है। दोनों रिक्शा लेकर सुबह से ही मुसाफिरों की खोज में निकल पड़ते हैं। अकौर बेनीपट्टी और बनकट्टा की पांच किलोमीटर की परिधि में इन्हें रिक्शा चलाते देखा जा सकता है। लोगों की सहानुभूति भी इनके साथ होती है। कहीं आने-जाने के लिए सबसे पहले लोग इन्हें ही तलाश करते हैं।
मां जया देवी कहती हैं कि संतोष के पिता मोहित राम पांच साल से टीबी से पीड़ित होकर मौत से जूझ रहे हैं। उनके बीमार पड़ने पर तीन भाइयों, पांच बहनों और माता-पिता की देखभाल का भार संतोष के कंधे पर आ पड़ा। संतोष ने हिम्मत नहीं हारी। उसने छोटे भाई की मदद से परिवार की गाड़ी खींचने का अदम्य साहस दिखाया और परिवार की परवरिश में जुट गया। रोटी-कपड़ा के साथ-साथ पिता का इलाज भी संतोष के लिए चुनौती थी। उसने इसे स्वीकारा। इसमें उसने अपनी लाचारी को आड़े नहीं आने दिया। पिता को बैंक ऋण के रूप में मिले रिक्शे को दोनों भाई एक साल से चला रहे हैं।
